The Star!

“…Where is He that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen His star in the east, and are come to worship Him.” – Matthew 2:2 (KJV)

The account of the wise men’s visit to Jesus is rooted in prophecy, going back to Balaam’s oracle during the Exodus. Balaam, despite being pressured by Balak, the king of Moab, to curse Israel, delivered a message of blessing from God. He prophesied that “…A star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel…” (Numbers 24:17 – NIV), foretelling the coming of a great King.

A thousand years later, this prophecy came to life when wise men (Magi) from the east followed a special star to find the newborn “King of the Jews” (Matthew 2:2). They journeyed to Jerusalem and then to Bethlehem, guided by the star, which stopped over the house where Jesus was. Filled with joy, they worshipped Him and offered gifts, recognising Jesus as the long-awaited King and fulfilment of prophecy (Matthew 2:10-11).

In contrast, King Herod, upon hearing of the birth, reacted with fear and deception. He sought to kill the child, but the wise men were warned in a dream not to reveal Jesus’ location and returned home by a different route (Matthew 2:12). This event reflects the fulfilment of the promise of a King who would rise from Israel. It is rooted in both prophecy and divine guidance, marking the recognition of Jesus as the promised Messiah and King of all nations.

The arrival of the King of kings and Lord of lords was not an afterthought; Jesus came so that all mankind would be saved. Today, if you have questions about faith or are uncertain about your state in life, remember you are thought about in a very special and loving way. God has ordained your presence; you are specially selected for this time and season. God loves you. Jesus came to the world to die for your sins. Choose Him today.

Prayer

Jesus, as Your star guided men to Your birthplace, may the light of Christ in us lead sinners to repentance. We thank You for the light of Christ as it illuminates our lives so we can welcome You into our hearts. Come, Jesus, we need You today in our lives and in our world. Amen.
